Womyn

Artist Statement

Being a Latina womyn growing up in a society that is very influential in its words and actions can be both frustrating and a beautiful experience. Most people in today’s society do not understand how impactful people of color have been by simply being true to themselves and their ancestors. And as a woman, I have seen how we attack and degrade women by simply belittling each other due to feeling threatened. Taking that into consideration, I wrote this poem for my mother, Lorena, the strongest and most kind-hearted person ever. This is dedicated to all the Latina mothers and Latina womyn… you are enough and you are life. Carry yourself through this hateful world with grace and resilience. Be the peace and intelligence that this world needs. I am a Latina womyn. I am full of purpose and purity and so are you, so are we.

My name is Jamy Garcia. I am 19 and entering my second year at CSUN. I am a part of the organization at CSUN known as EOP, and my major is undecided (too many to choose from). I play both volleyball and soccer, and I am a native speaker for both English and Spanish. My favorite things to do as hobbies are painting/drawing, eating, reading, writing, working out, and listening to music.
  1.  Womyn, are like a thunderstorms.
  2. Intense, || And yet you’re able to find the beauty in the eye of her ferocious storm.
  3. We grew inside of our womyn, and yet we hurt and exploit our women.
  4. Womyn are like a glass of water.
  5. Quiet, ||yet deadly enough to make you feel like you’re drowning.
  6. We were raised by our womyn, and yet we judge them for finding the courage to feel like womyn
  7. Womyn are like the sun.
  8. Stand too close and our presence shall melt you.
  9. Stand too far, and your life will have no light and no purpose.
  10. Womyn are goddesses sent directly to this earth, to bless, to love, to heal.
  11. Give us sperm and we will bless you with a child.
  12. Give us love and we shall bring you joy.
  13. Give us a home and we shall give you a family.
  14.  All these blessings yet our men in this society feel its right to penalize, degrade, and scrutinize our womyn.
  15. Pressuring our womyn,|| to act like sex symbols, traffic their prolific fruitiness, and at the end of the day act like it was nature’s plan all along.
  16. Women are like fire.
  17. We destroy and corrupt the ugly,  to make it into something beautiful.
  18. Add a spark and our flame will gain intensity.
  19. My womyn are like fire, mess with one of us|| and welcome to hell.
