are we american enough now?

8/21/2019

ARTIST STATEMENT

The concept behind this piece was inspired by the theme of DACA and TPS. I believe that many DACA and TPS individuals walk around feeling like this country does not welcome them. Our oppressors respect and love the U.S. flag more than the hard-working people that are behind their great successes. The U.S. flag is a symbol of the United States and what is means “to be an American.” Here are people of color, some who are DACA or TPS recipients, who are walking around always having to prove that they are good enough and deserving of their stay in this country.

Yessica Santana
My name is Yessica Santana (they/them/theirs). I am a 21-year-old, queer artist born and raised in the city of Ventura, California. I am currently attending California State University, Northridge and pursuing my love for the arts. Just in the past year, I have been able to create my own solo art show, be featured in presentations and articles, have done numerous interviews, and have collaborated with famous artists. My art ranges from creating tattoo designs, to doing live body painting, to curating events, to teaching dance classes in my community. Overall, I am very well rounded in the world of art and continue to expand my knowledge and challenge myself to new levels.
