El Viaje

Abstract

The journey that many migrants take to reach the United States is filled with pain and agony. Not only must people face tough weather conditions, but there is also border patrol, hunger, dehydration, extortion, and so many factors that make the journey so life threatening. El Viaje tells the story of the journey people make in the perspective of someone making this difficult trek to reach a better life. 

Maria Arango-Quintanilla

Maria Arango is a freshman who is majoring in Child Development. She is also a part of the EOP program and participated in commuter bridge 2019. Her essay and poem were inspired by the life experiences of her own parents crossing the border

"Vale la pena porque tendré una vida mejor y mis futuros hijos también."

El sol ardiente está brillando en todo mi cuerpo.
Mis piernas están débiles y siento que no puedo seguir más.
Mi boca está seca y todo lo que puedo pensar es en agua.
Un compañero de viaje me ofrece un poco de agua.
Tomo un trago y me da esperanza.
Esperanza en poder llegar pronto a mi destino.
He estado viajando por muchos días ahora.
Ha sido difícil estar lejos de casa.
Pero vale la pena.
Vale la pena porque tendré una vida mejor y mis futuros hijos también.
Siempre he soñado con el día en que llegue a los Estados Unidos.
Escuché que es bastante bueno y es bastante impresionante.
 Mientras pienso en esto escucho, "Estamos aquí en la frontera entre México y los Estados Unidos".​
